Wednesday, October 15, 2008 Cebu fencers whip up medals
CEBUANO fencers made huge impressions in the Philippine Amateur Fencing Association (Pafa) organized-Phil. Amateur Novice Fencing Championships held at the Pafa Fencing Hall at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig last Saturday.
The 11-man Cebuano delegations from the Center of International Education (CIE) and the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) won a silver and a bronze medal in the Foil event while three other fencers made it to the tough Top 8.
“It was an outstanding performance, considering it was participated by all schools that has Fencing in its curriculum,” explained Cebu Fencing Duellists Center’s Justin Chua.
Feat
Paolo Miguel Santiago, a Level 11 student of CIE won the silver medal in the Foil competition while Pocholo Calvo, a third year high school of SHS-J, earned the broze medal in the division.
CIE’s John Chy placed 5th and Morgan Joseph landed at the 7th place and Christine Cueta finished 8th in the women’s category.
Aside from the achievers, Gregory Gochuico, Patrice Anne Mendoza and Kim Lim of CIE and Anton Jefferson Lim, Jao Palma and Aspen Catingub of SHS-J took part of the competition.
Guidance
The CIE squad was coached by CFDC’s president and head coach Angelo P. Angel while the SHS-J students had Kairos Alo and Bryan Esguerra coaching at the side.
Aside from the Foil Event, the annual fencing event participated by fencers who has no experience in competing in major tournament, has Epee and Saber competitions.
Cebu fencers however, participated only in the Foil Event.
The Cebu Fencing Duellists Center in now preparing for the Cadets/Juniors Events which will be held tentatively early next year.
The Cadets event is for 10-15 years old fencers while the Juniors is for the 15-18 years old level. (RCM)
