Games Today (Philsports Arena)
9:00am — Philippines vs Thailand
11:00am — Australia vs Korea
1:00pm — Indonesia vs Taiwan
3:00pm — Japan vs China
5:00pm — India vs Kazakhstan

SPIKER Mi-Yeon Kim fired 11 points, including five booming kills, while Yu Hwa Kwak poured in eight points as the Koreans were closing in to get to the top spot of Pool E in the classification round for the quarterfinal pairings beating host country Philippines in a three-set victory, 25-15, 25-13, 25-23, in the classification phase of the seventh Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Championship at the Philsports Arena.

The Koreans did a perfect job on limiting Filipina team captain Alyssa Valdez to a team-high seven points in the contest, while Patty Orendain and Aleona Santiago each contributed four points only for the Philippines.

“My players worked very hard to win today,” said Kim Hong-Cheol, the Korean coach, through an interpreter. “We are now bracing for a tough game against tall Australian squad. We must play faster.”

Vengeance

The Philippines must pull an upset win today against Thailand on Wednesday at 9:00am in order to avoid facing a much tougher opponent in Pool F which includes defending champion Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, and Indonesia.

“Although we did not win a single set against the Koreans, we proved that we never give-up,” said RP girls coach Francis Vicente.

In other results, Thailand defeated Australia, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, also in Pool E action.

Luangtonglang Wanitchaya scored 16 points while Chuewulim Sutadta had 15 points for Thailand. Taliqua Clancy had 13 points as Shae Sloane had 11 markers for Australia.

Fighting

Japan took a step in taking the No. 1 spot in Pool F beating Chinese Taipei, 25-12, 27-25, 25-16.

Mari Horikawa and Shiori Murata had 14 points each while Fumika Moriya had 10 markers for Japan.

Australia faces Korea at 11:00am , followed by the game between Indonesia and Chinese Taipei at 1:00pm. Japan tackles China in what could be a possible finals match-up at 3 p.m. (MB)
