Friday, October 17, 2008 Van Roxas sings ‘tiny tony’ theme By Roger Serna Sound and images
IT was a fun-filled Saturday morning when some colleagues and I graced the taping of one of the anniversary episodes of ABS-CBN Cebu’s Kapamilya Winner Ka! It is supposed to be aired on the 25th (I’ll move heaven and earth to watch it). After the entire episode was about to wind up, we heard a commotion from the direction of the dressing room. Minutes later we found out that Pinoy Dream Academy Season II fifth placer Van Roxas was in the house to take part of the show.
Later when we partook of the buffet lunch, we had a chance to get some updates, like Van’s having been chosen to sing the theme song of the new weekly series Tiny Tony with John Prats in the title role.
He’s also going to release a CD lite album next month. His eyes beamed with excitement as he shared the news that he’ll be a guest in Sarah Geronimo’s show on Nov. 8 at the Araneta Coliseum sharing the same stage with other guests with the likes of John Lloyd Cruz and Piolo Pascual.
Oh! He’s climbing up the popularity ladder that fast! He’s got the talent and the looks anyway.
Meanwhile, he’ll be delighting his fans in Dumaguete City on Oct. 22 and his fellow Cebuanos, specifically in Aloguinsan, on the 23rd. Then a month later, he’ll be sharing the limelight with the PDA Top 6 scholars and other PDA scholars Apple Abarquez and couple Chivas and Bunny as part of the PDA tour.
By the way, Van’s handler or manager (whatever!) Mario Colmenares said during that chance meeting that he is now the handler of Chivas and Bunny which will be packaged as a couple in the tradition of Captain and Tenille. Nice.
Mario also said that after the operation which removed a mass in Bunny’s vocal area, the PDA scholar now has a more powerful voice. Good.

During that same meeting, Mario divulged that indeed his former ward, the PDA Season 1 first runner-up Jay-R Siaboc, has gained weight not because of anything else but because of the latter’s better appetite these days.
Despite his obvious added poundage, Jay-R is quite busy. In fact, he’ll be in Sydney, Australia tomorrow for a concert with PDA Season 1 star dreamer Yeng Constantino and young singer Makisig Morales.
Jay-R will be in Lapu-Lapu City on its fiesta celebration next month for a show with Apple Abarquez and his former band, Scrambled Eggs.
Mario’s efforts to devote more time to his wards are starting to pay off as they have their hands full of commitments. No wonder, Mario is all smiles these days! Good for you!

I was able to drop by the Kia Motors customer’s lounge one afternoon for the press conference held for the Cebu Chamber Singers’ coming benefit concert, scheduled at the Cebu City Sports Club at the Cebu Business Park on Oct. 24.
This is a fund-raising event for the group for its impending participation in an international contest in Korea in November.
It has a matinee at 2:30 p.m. and a gala at 7 p.m. The matinee is intended for those who find the tickets for this time more
affordable.
The repertoire of the group usually consists of inspirational, classic, OPM including Cebuano and contemporary songs. It’s nice to note that the group also sings during church services upon invitation.
More importantly, the Cebu Chamber Singers can also be asked to perform for free especially in the countryside as an outreach project upon special arrangements. Can’t wait to see you, folks, perform!

Someone who knows the art of dance like the palm of his hand, and is quite familiar with the Sadsad Oslobanon Festival and its catchy jingle, reacted to my column last week about my lament on the planned scrapping or replacement of the said festival.
He said that unlike other festivals around the province that focus on a particular product, the Sadsad Oslobanon Festival is a wide playground of ideas and concepts that a creative and imaginative (not to mention competent) choreographer can play around with.
Exactly. But, sadly, the mayor does not see or refuses to see this fact. That same person quickly added: “Could it be because the mayor cannot claim that it is his own creation, thus the plan to scrap or replace it?”
