Organizers invite out-of-school youth to join b’ball contest

THE GROWEE 3-on-3 Inter-School Basketball Tournament for the 12-Under division has opened its doors to community-based teams.

Aside from the examination week that affected the projected number of participants, the organizers want to involve the community-based teams to be a part of the tournament, which is aimed to develop the skills of the young aspirants.

Event coordinator Darren Evangelista, Rael Diaz, tournament director Rey Cañete together with Growee Pediatrica Inc. product manager Christian Immanuel Paz and district manager Marner Jimenez formally launched the event during the Scoop-Cebu Forum at Baseline Restaurant yesterday.

“At first, we targeted about 80 teams but because of the examination week we were forced to cut the participation between 40 to 60 teams. Fortunately, we opened the doors to the community-based teams. We now allow out-of-school players to participate, as long as they comply with the age requirements,” said Cañete.

Teams from powerhouse University of San Carlos South Campus, USC-North Campus, St. Alphonsus Catholic School of Lapu-Lapu, Paref-Springdale, Don Bosco College, Bright Academy, Sacred Heart School-Jesuits and some teams from public schools were the first to confirm participations.

Prizes

Although the projected number of teams from each school has lowered, Evangelista, a former Mapua Tech varsity, believes that the quality of competition is tougher and more intense.

The champion team will win P4,000 plus trophy and Growee products, while the rest of the top four teams will receive P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.

Late registrants are advised to proceed to SHS-J Mango Ave. Campus basketball court on Saturday, prior to the start of the competition. (RCM)
