USJ-R rushes win for graduation rites

THE University of San Jose Recoletos Lady Jaguars’ main protagonists, team captain Genie Sabas and Aina Laroga, came into yesterday’s game in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball competition all pumped and prepared. They were also in a hurry to finish the game as their graduation rites were right after the match.

Since they could not waste time, what was expected to be a tooth-and-nail game, turned into a lopsided match with USJ-R merely toying with the Southwestern University Cobras, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20, to move to the semifinal round with a clean 6-0 mark and the No. 1 spot.

Sabas, a former RP girls team member, and Laroga were at the forefront of the battle making sure that no opportunities were wasted en route to the win to save enough time to get their hair done in time for their graduation rites. Both finished with commerce degrees.

All Sabas and Laroga need to do now, is steer the team to take an unprecedented fourth straight title in the Cesafi to complete their graduation gift.

The Jaguars also displayed the stuff that brought them three championship titles proving they are a good defensive team as they dove, ran and chased any challenge the Cobras put in front of them.

The Jaguars will be facing fourth placer USC in the crossover semifinals today.

SWU was relegated to third place next to second placer University of Southern Philippines Foundation, who defeated Cebu Doctors’ University.

In the men’s division, defending champion University of San Carlos figured in an all-out war with its 2007 runnerup USPF, in what looked like a replay to their finals last year.

USC bounced back from a sloppy start to pull a 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, come-from-behind win. (MCB)
