Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Surfer wins silver for RP team
THE Cebuano beach volleyball players and their partners lost in their matches in Day 3 of the Asian Beach Games yesterday in Bali, Indonesia, but this did not stop the other members of the RP team to collect a silver and two bronze medals.
Fil-Australian surfer Luke Richard Thomas Landrigan had the best finish among the Filipinos yesterday as he claimed the RP team’s first silver medal after placing second in the long board contest.
This is the second medal doled out by the RP surfing team. The other one was a bronze from Carlito Nogalo, won in the shortboard event the other day.
“Sobrang saya. First international tournament ko ito sa labas ng Pilipinas tapos naka-silver pa ako,” said the 26-year-old Landrigan in a press statement. Landrigan, who has been surfing for eight years now, owns a surfing school in his hometown in La Union.
“I was confident when I topped the third round. But I knew anything could happen. Pagdating ng grand finals, nag-iba yung alon kasi low tide na. Parang mabilis pumutok ang alon, mas mahirap makahuli ng wave,” he said.
Aside from Landrigan’s silver, the Philippines also won two bronzes yesterday coming from dragon boat and pencak silat.
The RP dragon boat team claimed its second bronze after finishing third behind Myanmar and Indonesia in the 500 meter event.
In beach pencak silat, Emraida Asmad, bronze winner in the 2007 SEA Games and World Championships, lost to Malaysian Rina Jordan Haji Adnan 0-5 in the women’s pencak silat tanding Class A (45-50kg) division at Tanjung Benoa.
Meanwhile, in the beach volleyball competition, Ceb–uana Jusabelle Brillo and Marissa Bautista lost yesterday but gave their opponents, world beach volleyball standouts Kamoltip Kulna and Yupa Phokongploy of Thailand, a run for their money as the Pinays pushing them to their limits in three sets, 24-22, 21-24, 15-11.
They had another game scheduled late yesterday afternoon against Jordan.
Another Cebuano, Jonrey Sasing and Rhovyl Verayo absorbed its first loss bowing to Indonesia’s Suratna Suratna and Dian Putna Santoso 19-21, 21-13, 19-17, while Michelle Carolino and Suzanne Roces also lost its match against Vietnam yesterday. (MCB)
