Friday, October 24, 2008 Father shoots daughter’s girlfriend
A FATHER who did not approve of his daughter’s relationship with a woman decided to take matters into his own hands.
Asolito Abayon allegedly stabbed dead Marilyn Fernandez, 29, as she was heading home from work in Sitio Kansagire, Barangay Baring, Carmen Wednesday night.
Fernandez, who hails from Sitio Pasil, Barangay Cogon East, Carmen suffered a stab wound in the left side of her neck. She died before reaching Danao City District Hospital.
Carmen Police Station Chief Carlos Reyes said Abayon had tried persuading his daughter to break up with Fernandez.
However, the relationship went for more than a year.
Encounter
During the Danao City fiesta, he caught them together and got so mad that he threatened Fernandez.
Fernandez met Abayon’s daughter while working for a factory owned by a Taiwanese businessman.
When Abayon learned about their relationship, he quit his job at the Carmen Municipal Hall and began working at the factory to keep an eye on them.
Reyes said that some weeks back, Abayon and his wife filed a complaint before their office and claimed Fernandez “abducted” their daughter. They had to fetch her in Cebu City where Fernandez had reportedly taken her.
After that, Abayon thought he had succeeded in breaking them up. But when he saw them together in Danao City, it reportedly angered him.
Incident
Last Wednesday, past 8 p.m., Abayon waited for Fernandez to leave their workplace.
As Fernandez boarded a motorcycle-for-hire with two co-workers, Abayon leaped toward her and plunged a bladed object down her neck.
As of press time, Abayon remained at large.
Reyes said he spoke with Abayon’s daughter who was at the police station yesterday.
She reportedly said she had an “understanding” with Fernandez. When her father kept telling her to stay away from her, Fernandez would reportedly threaten to commit suicide, which was why she could not leave.
Reyes said they are preparing a murder charge against Abayon.
Injured
Meanwhile, a 22-year-old sales clerk was injured after being shot by an unidentified gunman Wednesday midnight along Uytengsu St. in Barangay Sambag II, Cebu City.
Sheila Pactoran, from Dipolog City and temporarily residing in Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, was treated for a gunshot wound on her back.
The bullet went through the victim’s chest, tearing the left side of her back.
PO1 Lou Pagara, one of the responding Homicide Section investigators, said Pactoran was declared to be out of danger. No vital organ was hit, he said.
Pactoran and her Canadian citizen male companion identified as Man Le were reportedly walking along Uytengsu St. when the attack took place.
Cover
The gunman was reportedly sitting on the sidewalk and had covered his face with both hands.
When Pactoran passed by the man who turned out to be armed, the latter allegedly stood up and shot her once.
Pactoran was rushed to the nearby Sacred Heart Hospital.
The gunman allegedly fled on foot, heading towards Osmeña Blvd.
SPO1 Roger Nedamo, the team leader of the homicide investigators assigned to the case, said they will talk to Pactoran as soon as she recovers from her injury.
He said that Pactoran’s statement will help investigators find possible motives for the attack. (JTG/MEA)
