Six Pinoys stay in contention in US 9-Ball Open
ONLY six of the nine Filipino world caliber pool masters remain in contention for the $40,000 top prize of the 33rd US Open 9-Ball Championship held at the Chesapeake Convention Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.
However, out of the four, only three will advance in Round 6 and only two will stay in hunt for the hot seat.
US-based Jose “Amang” Parica, Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Lee Van Corteza and Ronnie “Volcano” Alcano were the only four Pinoy cue masters who survived the tough Round 4.
However, two others are hoping to rise from the One Loss bracket—Ramil Gallego and Warren Kiamco.
Meanwhile, Parica will play defending titlist Shane Van Boening of the US in Round 5. Parica got his bearings after defeating David Broxson in Round 3, 11-7, before sending Marcus Chamat to the losers bracket in Round 4 after an 11-9 win.
Bustamante, meanwhile, will face Oscar Dominguez in Round 5 after defeating Darren Appleton, 11-6, in Round 4 yesterday.
All-Filipino
Corteza and Alcano, on the other hand, will be going at each other’s throat as they play each other in Round 5.
Corteza defeated Tony Chohan, 11-10, in Round 3 and Shannon Dualton, 11-9, in Round 4, while Alcano defeated Mitch Ellerman, 11-10, in Round 3 and Tyler Edey 11-8 in Round 4.
Gallego, on the other hand, defeated Erik Hjorliefson, 11-8, in the One Loss bracket to keep his hopes alive after losing to Tony Robles, 5-11, in Round 3 the other day.
Gallego will play Lee Huewagen for his next assignment.
Luck
Kiamco, meanwhile, will need all the luck as he faces Robb Saez in the losers bracket after losing to Josh Lewis 11-9 in Round 3.
Leonardo Andam, young upstart Joven Alba and Rodolfo Luat formally bid out of the contest after suffering their second defeats.
After losing to Markus Juva, 11-8, in Round 1, Andam defeated Richard Barney 11-5 before losing 6-11 to Rafael Martinez.
Alba, on the other hand, racked up two wins—11-6 over Willie Simpson and 11-6 over Tim Hall before losing 11-7 to David Vaughn. Alba lost to Chris Melling 11-9 in the first round.
Luat also suffered back-to-back defeats from Dan Louie, 11-10, and to former champions Nick Varner, 11-10, in Round 3. (RCM)
