Sunday, November 02, 2008 Private bank recognized for sending 10 poor youths to vocational school
A PRIVATE bank earned recognition from the Lapu-Lapu City Government for accepting 10 out-of-school youth from Barangay Maribago for its scholarship program and having them enrolled in a two-year Hotel and Restaurant Management course.
The program drew support from the different hotel-resorts in the city, assuring the students of employment after graduation.
City Councilor Junard Chan said the scholarship program ofthe Philippine Countryside Rural Bank (PCRB) not only gives hope to families that can’t afford to give their children formal education, and encouraged a coordinated help from other companies as well.
“This is something that is worth glorifying,” he said, adding that amid the lack of a tertiary school in the city, PCRB launched the scholarship program and picked Maribago as the pilot area. They had the recipients enrolled in a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-accredited school and pay P3,500 each per semester.
He said PCRB picked Maribago because of its hotel-resorts and souvenir stores for tourists.
Vice Mayor Mario Amores said the City will be giving a plaque of appreciation to PCRB.
He said it has also been agreed among companies in the city that Lapu-Lapu residents should be given priority in employment. (AIV)
