Siso steps up training for Malaysia tennis

SHE is on her last year in the Malaysian tennis circuit and Cebu’s tennis princess, Sally Mae Siso, is not taking any chances.

While the rest of the country are paying respects to their departed relatives, Siso is busting her lungs training at the San Carlos Seminary tennis courts.

“She wants to win all the medals of the legs that she will be taking part in. You know, pang last,” said her mother Sally.

Siso last played in the national finals of the Milo Junior Tennis Championships in early October, which served as the qualifying round for Malaysia. After that event, Siso has been out of the competition arena and held a racket only after school hours.

However, when school went out for the semestral break last week, she spent every waking moment at the tennis courts to train with her coach Bobby Soquiño in preparation for her Malaysian stint on Nov. 21

She, however, visited her late father’s grave last Friday to pay respect.

Sally Mae has a name to live up to as she is the only player to win all the four legs—Selangor, Langkawi, Perlis and
Penang—last year.

However, there won’t be repeat of her sweep last year as she will be playing in only two legs.

Siso will only play in Langkawi and Perlis. She joins four other Filipinos, who will compete in the two-week competition.

Milo, which bankrolls the Filipinos’ participation, only enlisted the troops in the two events explaining that the venues are too far from each other.

As an upside to this, Siso will now be able to compete in the city and provincial meet and possibly the Palarong Pambansa, which she opted to skip in order to take part in the Malaysian events.

Last year, Siso topped the Cebu City Olympics qualifying her to the regional meet, the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association. (Cviraa) She, however, pulled out of the Cviraa to compete in Malaysia therefore squandering the chance to play in the Palarong Pambansa. (MCB)
