IT was a musically enriching and fascinating event that I witnessed at the Cebu City Sports Club grand ballroom two weeks ago. The Cebu Chamber Singers (CCS) did a magnificent two-hour concert meant to raise funds for its upcoming trip to Busan, South Korea where its members will bring the name of Cebu and the Cebuanos in a major international choral singing competition.

THE group’s South Korean trip would be its second, the first being in November last year in Jakarta, Indonesia where it won gold in two categories in the 1st Asian Choir Games. I was with the CCS as its chronicler during the Jakarta sojourn.

AS usual, maestro Dennis Gregory Sugarol’s effort paid off. As CCS trainer and conductor, his task is not easy and light. In the recent fund-raising show aptly titled “2nd Movement: A Musical Journey,” he and the choir members gave justice to all 22 songs, including the encore Only You by The Platters.
Special mention goes to Wilson Po who was amazingly fantastic in his solo parts in Only You, Stand By Me and Da Cococnut Nut. CCS president lawyer Nelia Lagura, Karen Rose Nuñeza and Rose Anne Manuel also did solo parts in the Freddie Aguilar composition Anak. In sum, the “2nd Movement: A Musical Journey” was a wonderful trip to musicland, an unforgettable treat down memory lane.

IT is heartening to know that through Spotlight, local filmmaker Nards Chiu and former editor-in-chief and fellow columnist Jun Satorre, now US-based, have been able to communicate with each other after so many years. Both gentlemen share the same passion for the performing arts. I remember that when he was still here in Cebu and headed the National Press Club (NPC), Satorre produced and directed a gridiron (which was the talk of the town) as well as the NPC Celebrity Night.

TALKING of Chiu, he e-mailed that the Mantawi Foundation Inc. wants to produce two more Cebuano/Visayan movies aside from Inday, Paabota Ako sa Langit. The two are Milyonaryong Mini, a Tura Rodriguez masterpiece, and Kulas Kusgan. The latter project will be spearheaded by a Cebuano surnamed Impas who is connected with Pixar Studios animation company.

IS it true that a component city mayor here is under “house arrest” being imposed by the missus? Is it also true that the mayor is discharging his official functions inside his residence since he is being “grounded?” Just asking. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or text 09268443888)
