Family court judges to get cars from CH

FAMILY court judges will be the first to receive from Cebu City Hall a vehicle, which will be mainly intended for their trips to the Cebu City Operation Second Chance (CCOSC).

City Councilor Gerardo Carillo said that Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Olegario Sarmiento and two other family court judges will be assigned a vehicle immediately.

Carillo yesterday said the need for a vehicle was brought up during the recent meeting with the CCOSC management board, which Sarmiento heads.

The vehicle, the councilor said, will be shared by the three judges who visit the jail facility in the mountain barangay of Kalunasan almost every day to hear the cases of the minor offenders detained there.

“The judges go there almost every day and they need a vehicle that they can use…. Judge Sarmien-to followed up on the request for a vehicle mainly for the Operation Second Chance because they will need it more in the coming months,” Carillo told Sun.Star Cebu.

Members of the management board will be very busy soon, when the CCOSC will be converted into a youth home in compliance with the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.

Carillo, a lawyer, said he will discuss with Mayor-on-leave Tomas Osmeña the plan to give vehicles to all RTC Cebu City judges, which will be on top of the P5,000 monthly cash allowance each receives.

“For now, we will prioritize the family court and we will decide in the coming days what vehicle we will assign to them,” he said.

Osmeña first announced the plan to provide vehicles for judges last week, following reports that Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia withdrew the Capitol’s cash allowance for a judge who ruled in favor of the city mayor in a case involving him and the Province.

Osmeña, who is in the United States for urinary bladder cancer treatment, is expected to be back in the country on Friday. (LCR)
