Jakosalem wants TCC Chess in Dapitan event

THE newly organized Team Cebu City Chess could get their first foray in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) organizedand cash-rich Handuraw Chess Festival on Dec. 17 to 21 in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

The tournament, which is a pet project of NCFP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, dangles a total of P300,000 in prizes.

The champion team will go home with the top prize of P100,000, while the runnerup will earn P60,000. The third to fifth placers will bring home P40,000, P30,00 and P20,000, respectively.

Cebu City Council Committee on Games Amusements and Sports Chairman Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem said he will persuade acting mayor Mike Rama to send a team to the competition, which will attract teams from 40 cities, municipalities and provinces including colleges and universities.

“If they (Cebuano chess players) are willing to join we will send them but only if we can get the approval of our acting mayor.

Yes I will contact the local chess head and try to get the proposal from them to form a team,” Jakosalem told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Participating teams are entitled to field a minimum of four players and a maximum of five players but is only allowed to field one Grandmaster, IM, FM or NM.

The competition will run for nine rounds and will use the match point system. (RCM)
