Barrita: Cops, hoods in motorbikes
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

THREE motorbike-riding men, one of them tagged as a robbery gang leader, fired at Task Force Motorsiklo Cebu City cops manning a checkpoint near Plaza Independencia Sunday.

Motorsiklo cops returned fire and when gun smoke cleared, all three lay dead.

Hoods in motorbikes have met their match and probably their Maker.

***

Cebu City Police Chief Pat Comendador has warned hoods in motorcycles his motorsiklo cops have standing orders “to shoot, to maim and, need be, to shoot to kill.”

Sunday’s incident shows these cops are also quick to the draw.

Now, they’ll know Col. Comendador means business.

***

Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña, still on leave for urinary bladder cancer treatment in the US, congratulated the policemen
who killed the three suspected robbers and promised them a reward of P150,000.

With motorsiklo cops, he wouldn’t need vigilantes.

***

Mayor Tommy will be back in the City Friday to deliver his State of the City Address (Soca) on Saturday.

But his visit to the city will be brief because he’ll return to the US Sunday for an extended leave and for more treatment.

Well, he can always visit the City once in a while and become Cebu’s number one tourist.

***

Mayor Tommy will include in his Soca his health, aside from updates on the South Road Properties (SRP) and his plans for occupants of Province-owned lots in the city, City Administrator Bimbo Fernandez said.

That will partly turn the Soca into Soha, or the mayor’s State of Health Address.

***

Mayor Tommy sees no need to resign from his post but his treatment in the US requires him to stay there much longer or until after next year’s Sinulog.

He should say he won’t resign only once.

“Anyone who says he won’t resign four times, will,” John Kenneth Galbraith once said.
