Wednesday, November 05, 2008 ALA wants WBO first for The Dream
IT would be a dream match for ALA Gym star Z “The Dream” Gorres to fight Armenian champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan in a rematch.
However, ALA Promotions want Gorres to clinch the World Boxing Organization super flyweight crown first, before challenging Darchinyan.
“We would love that fight. It would be a dream fight for Z to fight for the three belts. But Z must win the WBO title first. Then challenge Darchinyan to unify the belts in the super flyweight category. They would make history in that weight division,” ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview.
Darchinyan owns three titles at present, the recently retained International Boxing Federation crown and the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council super flyweight titles that he won from Christian Mijares via a ninth round knockout last Sunday.
Encounter
Gorres and Darchinyan fought to a controversial draw last Feb. 2 in an IBF eliminator at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Gorres was supposed to fight for the Interim WBO super flyweight belt against Puerto Rican knockout artist Jose “Carita” Lopez on the eve of the mega match between Pacquiao and De La Hoya. However, the card was recently cancelled.
“The Gorres-Lopez fight is cancelled,” disclosed Aldeguer.
With the cancellation, Gorres’s handler plans to have Gorres fight in a big Cebu fight card in January possibly along with AJ “Bazooka” Banal.
“Z will possibly be slated on January, we’re going to keep him busy until he fights for the interim WBO title or possibly the vacant world title, if Montiel vacates it,” said Aldeguer.
Chances
Aldguer said that if Montiel, who was reported of having problems making the super flyweight weight limit, relinquishes his belt, then the bout between Gorres and Lopez will automatically be for the vacant title.
Aldeguer said that they are planning the Interim match of Gorres and Lopez in a neutral ground or here in the Philippines and not in Puerto Rico, which was earlier offered by Lopez’s promoter.
“We’re planning for the fight to be in Dubai or here in the country mid next year, maybe on April or May. We are willing to fight for a world championship there but not for an interim title.” (EKA)
