Six teams join Liga’s 2nd season

TEAMS that are looking forward to give powerhouse M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños a run for their money have one more month to prepare as the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Second Conference moved its opening date to Dec. 10.

Aside from the 13 other teams that are likely to return to the league to challenge the Cebuano squad, six new teams will be out to confront Cebu.

Only six of the 19 interested applicants were given the nod by the league officials to join the next season.

“The league’s second conference is scheduled to start on Dec. 10. The number of teams will be determined this week,” Liga Pilipinas head of operations Butch Antonio told Sun.Star Cebu.

Antonio disclosed that the league is eyeing to increase the number of teams to 20.

This will however, still go through a lot of planning and discussions and the viability of the locations of the LGU-based teams.

This will be discusses further during the team owner and manager’s two-day workshop will be held next weekend.

As of the moment, the teams assured of slots to the next season are the Davao City-based Montaña Pawnshop from the south and the teams from San Juan City and Manila.

Meanwhile, there will be a pre-season tournament slated on Nov. 12-16 here in Cebu. (RCM)
