Dengue claims 46th victim

DENGUE has claimed its 46th victim in Cebu City last month.

As was the trend, while there are fewer cases, more died due to dengue fever this year compared to the same period last year.

Only 32 died due to dengue in 2007 compared to 46 this year. The latest victim was three-year-old Nathaniel Miranda of Andres Abellana, Barangay Guadalupe, who died last Oct. 10.

Four days earlier, two-year-old Rish Bell Laborte of Sitio Caimitohan, Barangay Sapangdaku died of dengue.

The day before her death, three-year-old Guingguing Zander of UBCA III, Barangay Quiot also succumbed to the same illness.

According to the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Department (CHD), Guadalupe still tops the list among the 80 barangays as having the most number of dengue cases with 72 victims, six of whom died.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo reported before City Council colleagues in yesterday’s regular session that from January to October this year, 1,033 cases were reported.

The figure is 33.1 percent lower than the number of victims for the same period last year, which totaled 1,544.

With Guadalupe having the most number of dengue fever victims, Labangon is second with 49 cases with three deaths; Mabolo, 45 cases with one death; Basak San Nicolas, 45 cases with one death; Inayawan, 44 with three deaths; Tisa, 43 with four deaths; Lahug, 40; Camputhaw, 35; Sambag I, 34 with two deaths; and Bulacao, 33 with two deaths.

The CHD also reported a sustained trend of fewer dengue cases reported this year compared to last year.

For last month, only 44 cases were reported compared to 371 cases October last year, and just 60 cases last September compared to 319 cases for the same month last year.

There were 41 cases last June compared to 111 for the same month last year; 104 compared to 220 in July; and 103 compared to 352 in August. (RHM)
