Gwen a strong national candidate, says Manny Villar

SILAY CITY, Negros Occidental—Senate President Manny Villar considers Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia a “strong potential running mate” for the 2010 presidential election.

The governor, however, repeated an earlier declaration that she would not run for higher office.

Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez said that Villar, who has announced that he will run for president, told her that Garcia is ready to hold a national office in 2010.

“That (Villar-Garcia tandem) will be a strong one. Senate President Villar agrees that your governor (Garcia) is ready for national office, either for vice president or senator,” Perez said.

Gov. Garcia, Villar and Perez were in Silay City for the 11th Adobo Festival and 3rd Muscovado Competition at the Balay Negrense Museum.

They were accompanied by Negros Occidental Vice Gov. Emilio Yulo and Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano and other city officials.

They led the cutting of the ribbon to mark the opening of the museum.

During her State of the Province Address in July, Gov. Garcia said, “I cannot find myself leaving Cebu for anything—not for money, nor for fame, nor for greatness. Not even for higher office. My fellow Cebuanos, I am here to stay.”

Although Villar have not yet informed about the recent declaration of Governor Garcia, but Perez told him: “she (Garcia) might even become your vice president.”

Perez, during the event, announced his support for Villar as president and even addressed him as the “next Philippine president.”

In her speech, Gov. Garcia congratulated the Silay City Government for their festival. Garcia said she was impressed by the resident’s passion for culture.

Garcia, however, reiterated her stand that she won’t seek higher office in the 2010 elections. (GMD)
