Big boost

A FORMIDABLE University of the Visayas will be marching to the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) come Nov. 23 in Manila.

This was the assessment of UV head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug following the successful training that big man Greg Slaughter joined in Manila.

The training, aimed at molding a better big man, was hosted by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for the non-Philippine Basketball Association members of the RP training pool and was conducted by Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

Slaughter completed the training yesterday and will be back in Cebu today to go back in his regular training with his team. The acid test, according to Cabahug, will be the PCCL.

“With Greg getting a specialized training, we will be a more confident team coming into the PCCL,” said Cabahug, who has the burden of winning the national title for the Green Lancers 51 years after the school last took it.

Last year, UV made it to the finals of the PCCL in an epic 50-year-old rematch with Ateneo de Manila University, which the latter won.

“We are coming home tomorrow (today) and there will be a lot of practice that will happen because we will be because we will be back on the 23rd with the entire team for the PCCL,” said Cabahug.

Cabahug and the UV Lancers earned their slots for the PCCL after topping the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. for the eighth straight time.

Tiresome

“So far, the training was good especially for Greg. He told me that it was quite tiresome but will be useful in his game,” said Cabahug.

Slaughter, on the other hand, is excited to use the lessons learned on court.

“We did some big man drills but I haven’t been able to try it in a game yet. So we will see how the moves work out next time I play a game,” Slaughter added.

According to SBP executive director Noli Eala, Slaughter was chosen to join the training because he believes the UV’s 6-foot-11 center holds a lot of potential. (MCB)
