Blast from the past
By Michelle Gerdynn O. Binarao

COLORFUL skinny jeans, vintage clothes, balloon dresses, scarves and long blouses are just some of the “in” trends for teenagers today.

You can see girls and even boys wearing them everywhere in the city. So, when did this kind of fashion start?

Actually, this kind of fashion is not new to us, especially to those who belong to that “fashion decade” from the 1970s to 1990s.

We just made some few changes to make them look like new, just like the skinny jeans and the vintage pants, and not to
mention the hairstyles and accessories.

Notice the Nestea commercial endorsers? Their clothes and hairstyles belong to the 1970s-80s fashion.

Every time I see this commercial on TV, I feel like I am being brought back to another time. Then I realize that everybody looks like that now, especially the young ones, including me.

Well, since I am studying in a private and a Catholic school, it can’t be helped it if the administrators are strict when it comes to the clothes students wear especially for the girls.

So every Wednesday, we see to it that we still look stylish despite from the rules. Some girls wear long blouses or balloon dresses and colorful skinny jeans matched with a strapped sandal.

On the other hand, boys wear vintage pants with dark colors matched with a scarf or big sunglasses. Accessories, like dangling earrings, big necklaces, bangles and colorful or checkered headbands, are really good add-ons to your outfit.

I asked some students what they think of the trend and they answered:

“It seems like we’re going back from the 70s and 80s,” according to Clyde Maru an ABMC-4.

“Very colorful!” Gerard Cabras an ABMC-3 said.

“Masyadong maarte,” Ruby Jane Rabacca ABMC-4 said.

“Some tend to follow the style of Koreans. Checkered pants are in, some wear bright colors to stand out. Skinny jeans aren’t just for women anymore,” Andy Reynes ABMC-4 said.

I guess Clyde and I have the same opinion. For me, being “in” or not doesn’t really matter.

What matters is that you are comfortable with what you wear and see to it that you won’t look like a creature from another planet.
