Cebuana ready for Bowling World Cup

CEBU City’s talented young lady bowler Kim Lao will try to bring glory to the country as she competes on Nov. 7 to 15 in the 44th QuibicaAMF Bowling World Cup at Hermosillo, Mexico.

Lao, who is now in Mexico with her parents and Coach Jojo Cañare, will be representing the Philippines in the women’s category and will take on the best bowlers of the world in this annual competition.

The 18-year-old Linguistics student of the University of the Philippines Diliman earned her ticket to this world tournament after she dethroned last year’s representative and veteran bowler Liza Del Rosario last September in the 2008 Bowling World Cup National Finals at the Mall of Asia.

Along with Lao, representing the country in the men’s division will be Jeffrey Carabeo.

There are 60 countries in the women’s category with a total of 65 bowlers while there are 90 competitors in the men’s division from 90 countries.

All participants in both divisions will play a total of 24 games from Nov. 9 to Nov. 12 and each player will play six games a day. The top 24 bowlers of both categories will then move up to the semifinals and play eight games on Nov. 13. Then the elite eight of the semifinal round will proceed to the final round wherein they will play in a single round-robin format.

The player with the highest total pinfalls with bonus points will be then declared the winner of the world tournament.

Lao, who is a member of the Bowlingplex Tenpin Association, said last week before she left for Mexico that she will do her best and focus on the games at hand. She also added that she is very ecstatic to represent the country in an international tournament for the first time. (EKA)
