Pinays score 3 wins in Fiba Asia championships

THE Philippines 18-Under Women’s Team made an impression in its quest to make it to the elite Level 1 after scoring three straight wins in the 19th Fiba-Asia U-18 Championships in Indonesia.

The Pinays scored the first win of the competition, 74-67, over Thailand in Level 2 action last Sunday.

Fria Bernardo came off the bench to score 20 points on top of seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to lead the RP squad to victory.

Aside from Bernardo, starters Katherin Sandel also scored 15 points and Cindy Resultay added 10 as RP overhauled a sloppy first half for a come-from behind win.

With the confidence and high morale, the RP squad then scored an 84-53 domination over Hong Kong last Tuesday with Sandel leading all scorers with 18 points on top of seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Allalaine De Gomas also had 13 points, two rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Resultay and Bernardo added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Last Wednesday, the RP Young Women’s squad showed no mercy against Singapore following a 68-50 win.

Sandel dropped a double-double performance of 25 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals.

Raiza Palmera contributed 18 points on top of five rebounds, two assists and six steals and Agatha Marie Astrero finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

Toughest foes

Today, the Philippines will face the toughest team in Level 1, Kazakhstan, which dropped Singapore, 89-44, and scored an 81-61 decision over host team Indonesia.

Kazakhstan was playing Thailand at press time, while Philippines will wrap up its campaign with a game against Indonesia on Saturday.

If the Philippines will land on the top two spots in Level 2, they will have a chance to move to the elite Level 1 with China, South Korea, Japan, Chinese-Taipei, Malaysia and India are playing. (RCM)
