USJ-R faces elimination in football

THE defending Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) is at the brink of losing its crown in the last game of the elimination round of the Collegiate Division of the 2008 season as it battle a formidable foe, the No. 1 Univeristy of San Carlos (USC) squad at the USC-Technological Center this afternoon.

USJR, which has five points with a single win, two draws and a defeat, is at the fourth spot at present and is closely battling to clinch a berth in the semifinal round against University of Cebu, which is at fifth place with two points.

A win or a draw against USC would put USJ-R to the semifinals. However, if it loses to the undefeated USC team, it will tie with University of Cebu (UC) at fourth place.

The only way UC could steal the last semifinal spot is if it destroys the winless Cebu Doctor’s University by 16 goals or more.

USJ-R has scored 13 goals in four contests and only conceded three goals, while UC capped five goals and gave up 10 goals.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 University of Southern Philippines Foundation will try to take back the top spot as it will be up against University of the Visayas.

USPF could clinch back the top seed if it wins against UV and USC loses to USJ-R.

USPF owns nine points with two wins and a single loss, while UV holds 6 points with a lone win and three draws.

The top four teams will be playing in the semifinal round next Saturday with the top seed facing the fourth placer and the second seed playing the third placer. (EKA)
