Protest vs. RH bill continues

MORE than 6,000 students converged at the Cebu City Sports Complex yesterday for a grand rosary rally against the passage of the controversial Reproductive Health bill.

“Since they are all here, they are supporting this cause,” said Abellana National School principal Ernesto Jacel.

Jacel added that he is also against the move of having sex education integrated into the school curriculum.

“It needs an expert to discuss these matters,” said Jacel. But he confirmed that sex education was already integrated in the school’s Science subjects.

Integrate

“At this time, we are integrating sex education in Makabayan. We are integrating these topics in the Science subjects. What we emphasize in school are only on the natural family planning methods,” said School District Supervisor Rhoda Labella.

Students are likewise taught of the consequences of getting pregnant and having unprotected sex.

Labella added that sex education is just too sensitive issue and “too personal.”

“We do not even discuss it at home. And now in school?” said Labella.

At the same time, the Council of Marian Devotions has high hopes that the bill will not be passed into law.

Prayers

“What we are really relying on right now are prayers. Prayers are our only weapons. Prayers can move mountains,” said Zenaida Belciña, president of the Council of Marian Devotions.

In an effort to get more protesters against the controversial bill, the council has helped the Archdiocese gather more signatures.

“We were able to gather signatures from the different parishes, even as far as Tubigon (Bohol),” said Belciña. The council has already gathered 54,000 signatories.

They expect to get one million.

In an effort to change the minds of the congressmen who are supporting the bill, the council will be sending letters to them. (EPB)
