Tuesday, November 11, 2008 Pool group says ban is toothless
NOTED billiards manager Perry Mariano was unfazed by the threat of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) and World Pool Billiard Association (WPBA) to ban the players who will participate in the Senate President Manny Villar Cup – Bacolod City International Billiard Festival on Nov. 13 to 16.
Mariano, who manages the careers of Dennis Orcullo, Ronnie Alcano, Roberto Gomez, Gandy Valle among others, described the resolution passed by BSCP as toothless.
“It’s worthless, they don’t even have a tournament,” Mariano told Sun.Star Superbalita.
The Bacolod International Billiard Festival is a project of the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP), an organization Mariano helped form.
BSCP’s action stemmed from the absence of the top cue masters and former world champions Efre “Bata” Reyes, Alex Pagulayan, Alcano and other Pinoy cue artists in the World 10-Ball Championships last month.
“It’s all a threat so that the top players will return to their fold because they are short of players right now. Most of the top notch players are with the BMPAP,” he said.
Competition
According to BSCP the players who will join the Bacolod City tournament will be not able to join the BSCP and WPBA events and will not be sent to the Asian Pocket Billiards Union-sanctioned tournaments.
BSCP also added that players needed to affiliate themselves with organization before they can join any WPA organized events like the World Pool championships.
“BSCP has not spent a single centavo in sending the players to international competitions. We (BMPAP) are the only ones who spent so that we can send the players to international competitions,” Mariano added. (RCM with ESL)
