Ateneo beats La Salle in golf

THE members of the Ateneo Alumni golf team reclaimed their glory as they defeated their archrivals in the 7th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic last Tuesday at the Cebu Country Club golf course.

The Ateneans swept the Match Play contest in Day 3 for an additional 22 points to close the two-day golf event with a commanding 88-34.

After having its five-year reign ended last year, Ateneo made sure that La Salle couldn’t duplicate the feat as it went all out to win this year’s friendly golf event, having almost twice as many players as La Salle.

Notable on Ateneo’s win was Jovi Neri, who scored the lowest gross of 68 and Efren Sarmiento winning the lowest net of 65 points via countback over fellow Atenean Kento Nakada.

Top three

The three players’ top finish in Class A categories gave Ateneo 23 points. La Salle’s Mary Kim Hong got two points for her fourth-place finish.

Shotaro Shoda also scored the lowest net among Class B players for an additional 10 points to the Ateneans, while La Salle earned points from Jojo Ong’s lowest net finish.

Brucedy Chan of La Salle took the 10 points in the Class C division for his lowest gross of 85, while Ateneo took the next three spots.

Ateneo also got 10 points from Andre Borromeo’s victory in the Open division, while Eric Tensuan added another eight.

Special awards

Sebastian Lacson and Javy Quintos won the remaining seven points for La Salle after finishing first and third, respectively.

In the special prizes, Jet Neric won P2,500 for coming within 53 inches from the cup in Hole No. 3 for the nearest to the Pin award, while Bruce Chiongbian was just 84 inches from Hole No. 5. Other winners were Antonio Pineda for Hole 13 and Kent de la Calzada for Hole No.15.

This year’s La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic was sponsored by PLDT, Filinvest, RDak Transport, Kings Quality Foods Inc, Fine Upgrades Inc., Pagcor, Plantation Bay Resort, Mooon Cafe, Commonwealth Estate Inc, Kainos Medical Clinics, BT 105.9 Monster Radio and Y101. (RCM)
