LILOAN achieved a milestone after beating 44 other municipalities in the 2008 Cebu Provincial Meet it hosted the past week.
For Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco, the win puts his town’s sports and grassroots programs in the spotlight.
“I am so proud of Liloan, especially our athletes and coaches. They really deserved to be called champions,” said Frasco.
Frasco added that their victory is a clear sign that their support bore fruits.
“It just goes out to show that our sports program is quite strong already.
Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been the champion,” said Frasco. “This championship is just indicative that the support of the sports program in Liloan is working. However, there is always room for improvement. Where we need to improve, we will work hard on that so that the next time, we will once more be champion.”
Frasco also expressed his pride for his town’s successful hosting.
Liloan was far behind in the rankings in the penultimate day and was running eighth in the overall tally. However, after the ball games were finished, Liloan found itself on top after posting a total of 203 points from both the elementary and secondary divisions.
Liloan was followed by Bantayan and Compostela.
Points
The town’s elementary division managed only to make it to second place in the ranking but the team was lifted by its success in the secondary division.
Liloan won only one gold medal in the medal-rich athletics event but made up for it in the ball games .
Team events get more points than the individual competitions.
The host team capped its winning performance yesterday after winning in the boys’ secondary volleyball and baseball competition. Liloan also won elementary football, archery and gymnastics.
Co-host Compostela took the second place in the high school division with 152.5 points, while Bantayan had 144 to take third place.
Last year’s champion, Balamban, salvaged fourth place with 142 points.
In the elementary division, Balamban retained the title, with Liloan second.
In the remaining events yesterday, junior netters Ed Adrian Parangan and former Milo Most Outstanding Athlete Crissian Issa Kintanar of Balamban, took the elementary titles.
