Saturday, December 06, 2008 PSC chair Ramirez mulls resignation
PHILIPPINE Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez has pondered on resigning from his post as the head of the country’s sports governing body for a long time.
But when he tendered his resignation last week, he was not released from the post.
An educator himself, Ramirez said that he wanted to begin the year with a fresh start, hoping to get back into the academe as the vice president of the Philippine Sports Institute, which will be launched next week.
Ramirez denied that the poor showing of the RP team in the Olympics was his reason for resigning, though he admitted that he was disappointed with it.
“I suppose it is time to hand over the torch to someone. If I was not able to produce a medal for the country, then someone else could,” he said.
The sports chief added that he is planning on concentrating in Mindanao sports.
“If I was not able to do it on the grander stage, then maybe I’ll focus on the macro and strengthen the regional training centers,” said Ramirez, who believes that Mindanao has a huge talent base waiting to be discovered.
Ramirez admitted that while he considers himself competent enough to run the commission, he can’t help but feel frustrated.
“For one, the allocation from Pagcor that is supposedly for the PSC is not given to the agency and secondly, the politicians do not have the passion for it. They do not take it seriously,” said Ramirez. (MCB)
