Barrita: Bushisms
By Eddie O. Barrita

REP. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district) and his pals pushing for House Bill 5619, which seeks for the return of English to classrooms, are up against pockets of resistance in the House.

I hope their opponents don’t want us to produce clones of US Pres. George W. Bush who is leaving behind a legacy of Bushisms, the label for his mangled English.

See what Bush told President Arroyo about Fil-Am White House chef Cristeta Comerford in a meeting in Washington, D.C., June 24, 2008:

"I want to tell you how proud I am to be the President of a nation that--in which there's a lot of Philippine-Americans. They love America and they love their heritage. And I reminded the President that I am reminded of the great talent of the--of our Philippine-Americans when I eat dinner at the White House."

The Obamas are retaining Comerford as her superb cooking apparently has nothing to do with Bush’ mangled English.

Bush sees victory in Iraq but how could that happen if all his general did was snatch defeat?

“There is no doubt in my mind when history was written, the final page will say: Victory was achieved by the United States of America for the good of the world,” he told US troops at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, Jan. 12, 2008.

“And so, General, I want to thank you for your service. And I appreciate the fact that you really snatched defeat out of the jaws of those who are trying to defeat us in Iraq,” he told Army Gen. Ray Odierno, Washington, D.C., March 3, 2008.

Last Sunday, I and fellow columnist and ace broadcaster Bobby Nalzaro and Globe executive Jerry “JY” Yntig visited Barangay Guba, which celebrated the feast of Sr. Sto. Nino.

A huge number of parishioners attended the hourly masses.

Parish priest Fr. Jed Matela entertained us but Jerry Yntig has to do something because there’s no Globe signal in Fr. Jed’s parish.
