AFTER targeting World Boxing Organization super bantamweight Juan Manuel Lopez for the past year, Filipino world champion Gerry “The Fearless” Peñalosa is getting closer to his goal after accepting an offer to fight him in Puerto Rico.
The 36-year-old Peñalosa quickly agreed with the proposal to fight the undefeated fighter and believes he can dethrone him.
“They say I’m old and my days are numbered. Then we’ll see with this fight with Lopez,” Peñalosa told SportsNews.ph. “I know he is a tough fighter and fights toe-to-toe but I guess he is still young. At this stage of our careers, I’m capable of beating him.”
Although Peñalosa agreed with the offer of Lopez’s camp, the final decision, if the fight will push through, is still up to Lopez.
“If he really is the next big thing of the sport, then give him a tough test by fighting me. I’m more than willing to travel to Puerto Rico and fight him in front of his hometown,” said the two-division world champion.
Challenges
Peñalosa, who is 53-6-2 with 36 knockouts, is up for the challenge against the 25-year-old Puerto Rican knockout artist, who has 24 wins with 22 knockouts.
“I love challenges. If people get to watch all my losses it was because all those who beat me never really fought me. All they did was run,” said the WBO bantamweight king.
Peñalosa is currently slated to fight in Mandaue City against a still to be determined opponent.
He will be fighting alongside Filipino bantamweights Rolando Magbanua, Jundy Maraon and Glenn Porras in the Mandaue card. (EKA)
