Parking fees good source of income, Militar says

THE implementation of the newly amended parking fee ordinance will turn out to be a good source of revenue for the city government of Davao which is expected to easily earn a total of P15 to P17 million a year from the increased parking fees, City Councilor Bonifacio Militar said.

Militar, author of the amended parking fee ordinance, said in Thursday's Club 888 Press Forum that once the executive department hires 100 parking fee collectors as mandated by the amended ordinance, the city can collect an estimated average income of P500 everyday.

The amended ordinance has increased parking fee from P2.00 to P5.00.

"This will be a big boost to the city," Militar said, adding that members of the executive department must realize the immediate need of implementing the ordinance especially at this point
in time when the city government is finding other means to spur income due to the expected cuts in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

The parking fee collection, he said, has been proven an income generating scheme for local governments in other areas. Makati, for instance, earns a total of P97 million while Mandaluyong reaps P64 million annual revenues from parking fees alone.

Cebu City, on the other hand, earns about P32 million a year from parking fees.

The ordinance, despite its approval by the City Council and City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, has not yet been implemented.

City Treasurer Engdian Kong has earlier said that the city government will find it difficult to hire 100 parking fee personnel due to lack of funds.

He has said that he is bent on recalling revenue collection officers detailed in the different divisions under the city's economic enterprise today, even if the amended ordinance mandates the executive department to hire 100 collectors for contract of service at P5,000.00 each to collect the new parking fees.

Militar however said that he is apprehensive that the employees will complain since they are handling responsible positions and receive higher salaries.OCE
