Table tennis team off to friendship games

AN elimination round will determine who will compose the Davao City three-man table tennis team to the 2nd Mindanao Friendship Games slated October 27 to 31 in Cagayan de Oro City.

This was bared to Sun.Star Davao Thursday in an interview with City Councilor Peter Laviña who is also the honorary adviser of the newly formed Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (MDTTA).

"The city's top ten men players will join the eliminations from which we will pick the best three to represent the city in the Games," Laviña said.

Since there are only few women table paddlers to choose from, Laviña said they may not have to hold eliminations for them.

MDTTA president Friendee Nuñez earlier announced that the top-rated Aberilla sisters Charmaine and Haidee will be among the six-man table tennis team to be funded by Laviña.

Laviña said the city's No. 1 male player Michael Dalumpines is no longer eligible to compete in the Games, citing his stint in the national table tennis team in the past.

"There is a rule that former members of the RP team are ineligible, so Dalumpines will serve as the team's trainor-coach," said Laviña who appeared at Thursday's weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

Laviña said he would "go to Cagayan de Oro personally to cheer our athletes."

Support from the private sector and individuals is being sought to fund Davao City athletes' participation in the Games.MLS
