Youth chess on Sept. 28
SUSTAINING the development of chess among Davao City's youth is the primary objective of the monthly NCFP 2002 Chess Youth Active Championships.
This month's edition is slated September 28 at the city's division schools training center along Palma Gil St. here.
Co-organizer National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director Ronnie Tabudlong said, "we can only offer minimal cash prizes, but we just want to provide opportunities for the kids to compete on a monthly basis.
What good will it do to come up with big cash prizes in only one tournament a year? The players won't improve at all."
Tabudlong, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday, said the one-day tournament follows the 30-minute active five-round Swiss System format.
NCFP ratings will also be at stake for the winners in the chessfest sponsored by Davao City Sports Council Inc. president Vic Sai and Sports Development Division officer-in-charge Galvani Yanong.
Panabo City's James Bulicatin and Davao City's Adrian Dimakiling, who clinched the 16-under and 12-under titles last month, are set to defend their crowns.
Bur woodpushers from Compostela Valley, Tagum City, General Santos City and Davao Oriental are also expected to provide stiff opposition.MLS |
