Rugby boy shot dead
By Aurea A. Gerundio

ANOTHER butcher, known in the area as a rugby boy, was shot dead in Panacan Public Market, Davao City, early morning Thursday.

Sasa Police identified the victim as Raquel Serrano, 17, a resident of Purok 3, Panacan Relocation, Davao City.

Initial investigation of PO3 Alfredo Heliane showed that Serrano was sleeping while attending the market stall of Elpidio Alvarado at around 4:30 a.m. when an unidentified gunman shot him once in the head.

Serrano was immediately brought to the Davao Medical Center but died a few minutes after he was admitted. The body was then transferred to Rivera Funeral Parlor awaiting the relatives to claim him.

Recovered from the crime scene was an empty shell of caliber .45 pistol.

It was learned that Serrano had been confined at the Bago Oshiro Rehabilitation Center for four months and was released in December last year.

Serrano, the police said, had also been frequently detained for using rugby.

Several neighbors also told the police that Serrano was reported to have looted stalls in the market.

But Heliane said police are still establishing the motive of the killing and identity of the assailant.

Last Wednesday morning, a butcher at Mintal Public Market was also shot dead by still unidentified perpetrator.

Rufino Gripo Jr., 26, resident of Mintal Proper, died of several gunshot wounds in the head and other parts of the body.

Like Serrano, he was also attending to his market stall when the suspect gunned him down at around 7 a.m. using a caliber .45 pistol.

SPO4 Rolly Tropico said that Gripo had no police records.

As of this writing, the Tugbok police are still tracking down the suspects.
