Ateneo de Davao University through the years
AS ONE of Davao City's bastion of quality education, Ateneo de Davao University has undergone considerable changes the last 25 years.
Alumnus from different eras look back into the past during last week's awarding ceremonies of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award the Marco Polo Hotel Davao.
From an all boys' school, the transformation began when it accepted females during the early 70s for the elementary grades and in 1979 for the high school department.
One of the school's elder alumni, Ariel Barlis, batch '61, said that most of the members of the faculty then were Jesuits.
He claims that the Jesuits were staunch disciplinarians and would make erring students stand under the sun as punishment.
According to Edgardo Lagman, batch '73, Ateneo during his time was composed of four sections per year level. Now the number has quadrupled to 12 sections per year level.
Lagman said that his era saw the "wash day" when one day each week, students were allowed to wear civilian clothes. The practice was stopped in the late 1980s.
Ateneo at present is still relatively strict and has expelled two students for stealing, according to high school seniors, Eugene Dayanghirang and Doods Quemada.
They said that the high school department is presently undergoing a transition period.
They added that the appointment of Perla Funa recently as principal has seen changes in the administrative and academic departments. AFD
