OMA gives no assurance on Moro offensives By Christie L. Enriquez-Uayan
OFFICE of Muslim Affairs 11 Director Cabinbanan Q. Mamukid Saturday said he could not promise a complete absence of retaliation from the Muslims residing in the region or in the Mindanao area in the event of a US-Iraq war.
"But we have always told them to be calm and reasonable," Mamukid said in an interview.
He added that at present, he has basis to believe that no untoward incident will ensue.
Like the millions who joined anti-war rallies all over the world last week, Mamukid believes there is not enough reason for the US to declare war against Iraq, or any country for that matter.
He said he opposes any plan of US to attack Iraq because it is
predominantly an Islam country and many countries will be affected by the war.
Mamukid said he hopes US president George W. Bush will be convinced by global protests pushing for peace.
"Unta maka huna huna si Bush ug tarong na huna huna nga sa kadaghan sa nagpugong sa iya sa tibook kalibutan nga dili giyerahon ang Iraq. (I hope US Pres. Bush will heed the call of the people's voices telling him not to attack Iraq)," he said.
Mamukid added that he is inclined to believe Iraq's theory that the US's main impetus for the attack is to control the rich oil fields found in the said Middle East country with Iraq as the second largest oil producer in the world.
He said North Korea, which has declared that they have been keeping weapons of mass destruction, has only got the US worried while Iraq, which has repeatedly claimed to have rid itself of
chemical and biological weapons, is treated with hostility and aggression by the US government.
Despite worldwide appeals for peace, Bush has remained adamant in his stand to attack Iraq. CEU
