Plans for 2004 not yet definite: Lacson By Ben O. Tesiorna
SENATOR Panfilo "Ping" Lacson denied having any connection with groups supporting his bid for presidency in 2004.
Lacson, who was in the Davao City last Saturday, said he is unaware of any group pushing for his candidacy as president.
He said his political party has not yet decided who would be its standard bearer for the 2004 presidential elections, adding that whatever the opposition decides he would readily submit to it.
Sen. Edgardo Angara recently declared that he would no longer pursue his earlier plan to run for president, leaving only Lacson and actor Fernando Poe Jr. as the probable candidates of the opposition.
When asked who would be his most worthy opponent for the presidency, Lacson said it would be Sen. Juan Flavier.
"Sen. Flavier is one of the most decent members of the Senate," he said.
Lacson said that late last year he had a talk with Flavier regarding their possible team-up for 2004, but that this was "cut short" by people who were against the idea.
Lacson said Flavier, however, has not totally closed the door to such a possibility.
On Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes' reported plan to also run for president, Lacson merely laughed, saying he heard such a rumor.
'But I do not find him a worthy opponent simply because he is not a Flavier. He's far from it," Lacson quipped.
Lacson was here to attend the induction of the officers of Greater Davao Jaycees. BOT
