Criminality to rise due to unemployment By Christie L. E. Uayan
THE provincial police office of Davao del Sur expects an increase in petty crimes this year as a result of the large unemployment rate within the province.
Police Provincial Director Samuel Navaja said, although illegal drug trafficking remains the top problem in the area, theft and crimes against property will also increase.
Supt. Navaja said the police have intensified their operations against drug trafficking by organizing the Kiblawan Defenders, a quasi-police force tasked to monitor illegal activities of bad elements in the community.
According to Navaja, since January this year, they have seized a total of 15.1 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, otherwise known as shabu in at least 11 drug bust operations.
Navaja, who was among the participants during last week's Provincial Peace and Order Council, said the police uncovered 57 hills of marijuana within Davao del Sur. Fourteen persons have been charged with violation of Republic act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
