Farmer dies, another hurt in duel to death By Raquel C. Bagnol
A FARMER was killed, while a neighbor, also a farmer, was hospitalized after the two engaged in a duel to death due to a dispute over water supply from a government irrigation system for their rice fields in Makilala, Cotabato last Saturday night.
The dead was identified as one Juanito Trabuco, 37, married, of Jose Rizal, Makilala who didn't make it alive to Kidapawan Specialist Hospital in Kidapawan City due to multiple stab wounds in different parts of the body.
The suspect was identified as Ramon Salazar, 46, married, and of the same place. Salazar is himself confined in the Dizon Hospital in Kidapawan City where he is recuperating from stab wounds in his stomach and right hand.
According to PO2 Norberto S. Calayca and SPO4 Eulogio Abatay Jr. of Makilala Police Station, the fight started when the deceased reportedly diverted the flow of water supply to his own rice field that morning, as a result depriving the suspect's rice field of water coming from the National Irrigation Administration irrigation system.
Salazar told police that Trabuco struck him with a shovel and pulled out a 10-inch knife and attacked him, forcing him to defend himself.
Salazar admitted he pulled out his own 7-inch knife. The two neighbors scuffled on the ground stabbing each other in a deadly bolo duel until a trailer operator working in the nearby field succeeded in disarming them.
Further investigation showed that that morning's incident triggered their long-time grudges over land dispute. Neighbors brought Salazar to while Trabuco's remains now lie in state at Collado Funeral Parlor in Kidapawan City.
