20 OSYs complete shoeshine training

TWENTY out-of-school youths aged 11 to 15 years Friday completed the Shoe-Shine Training seminar conducted by the Sta. Ana Police Station for them.

The training was under the leadership of Police Chief Inspector Filmore Escobal in cooperation with the City Social Services Development Office in Barangay 27-C, Sta. Ana, Davao City.

The CSSDO staff, in fulfillment of Project Out-of School Youth Serving Towards Economic Recovery (OYSTER), took time to look for beneficiaries of the said program, mostly from Barangays 23 and 27.

They came up with 20 boys who were given hands-on training on the basics of how to shine shoes by Jozel Bautista, the governor for City Poblacion East for Persons with Disabilities.

Escobal said the program is a fulfillment of one of President Gloria Arroyo's programs to give out-of school youth opportunities to develop skills for livelihood. He advised the boys not to waste their youth but to try to earn money. He added that this is the first time such a program was conducted in the city. The goal is to keep the children occupied with useful projects and divert their attention from vices.

"When I was in the Philippine Military Academy, the first thing we were taught to do was to shine shoes. This is a very useful and profitable skill," Escobal told the boys.

After completing the training, the boys were provided with free shoeshine kits, which include brushes, lanking, foam, shoe polish, dye and also dark-blue t-shirts printed with "PROJECT OYSTER, PP1 Sta. Ana. for their uniforms, all courtesy of Chief Escobal who footed the bill for all the materials.

Escobal said that a few days from now, four shoeshine structures would be installed in the city. One will be outside the NCCC, one in Magsaysay Park, another on Magsaysay Avenue and one in Agdao.

"We will monitor the boys and see to it that they earn money." he said.

SPO4 Chito De Aro and Lilibeth Paran, Child Youth Coordinator of CSSDO in City Pob facilitated the whole day affair. East, Davao City. RCB
