DC boxers are champs By Lorenzo M. Gahol
DAVAO City topped two divisions and placed second in another to emerge the overall champion in the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) boxing competition, which ended Saturday.
Veteran national campaigner Vernel Desabille spearheaded Davao's triumphant campaign here by taking the paperweight title.
Desabille, last year's Palarong Pambansa silver medal winner, scored two standing eight counts on the way to a points victory over Adones Gomez of Compostella Valley in the 42 kgs. category.
The victory earned Desabille another Palaro stint.
Jonas Jerusalem, considered a rising star of the Davao City boxing team, made it a double victory for the Big City pugs when he knocked out Rolly Hirami of Davao del Sur.
Jerusalem ended the bout with a solid punch to Hirami's midsection 40 minutes into the second round to rule the Pinweight (45 kgs.) class.
Davao was actually eyeing for another win, but Marlon Sequina lost to a opponent in Ronald Ompad of Digos City in the light flyweight (48 Kgs.) finals.
In other finals bouts, Charlie Suarez gave Davao del Norte its lone win by outpointing Reynel Diamale of Davao del Sur in the mosquito (36 Kgs.) category, while Normen Adang of Digos defeated Romeo Miranda of Davao del Norte in the vacuumweight (39 Kgs.) class.
The winners in all five categories will represent Davraa region in the Palarong Pambansa slated in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.
