Davao City wiped out in Mati tennis By Marianne L. Saberon
THE Davao City tennis team to the Penn-Mayor Francisco Rabat Southern Mindanao Age-Group Tennis Championships ended up with a big fat egg.
Not even one of the Big City bets won a title at the conclusion of the event Tuesday at the Mati municipal courts.
Michael Misa settled for runner-up honors only after bowing to Franz Bonilla of Bansalan, Davao del Sur 6-4, 6-4 in the boys 18-under finals.
But Bonilla was subdued by Mati standout James Patrick Pang 6-2, 6-4 for top honors in the 16-under category.
Juan Paolo Cansino, who bannered the Davao City Durians in the Davraa Meet recently, also lost his finals match to Renz Bonilla of Bansalan in the 10-under unisex.
Cansino absorbed a 0-6, 2-6 thrashing at the hands of his foe as Davao City failed to come up to expectations in the three-day event.
Philippine National Youth Games-Batang Pinoy gold medal winner El Santo Santos of Tagum City won the 12-under category after beating Mati's Eric John Amerkhan, 6-2, 6-3, and Wilfredo Roselio of Digos City, 6-2, 6-1.
In the distaff side, veteran age-grouper Patricia Adaza of Mati downed teammate Macy Serrano, 6-3, 6-1, to grab the girls 16-under crown.
It was Adaza's second title after earlier annexing the 18-under crown Monday in this event organized by the Philippine Tennis Association regional vice-president Juanito Cansino Jr. and backed up by the municipality of Mati and Penn Balls.
Serrano, however, bounced back to pocket the 14-under title with a big win over anither Mati campaigner Julienne Cabisong, 6-1,6-1.
Camille Zapatos of Mati, meanwhile, recovered from a first set loss to beat General Santos City's Jujenne Mendoza, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, in 12-under finals.
The second leg of the Southern Mindanao circuit gets underway today in Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental.
