Davao players crush Cavite in inter-city chess
DAVAO City opened its campaign in the National Inter-Cities Chess Team Championships on a high note, crushing 30th-seed Cavite, 4-0, at the Philippine National Science High School multi-purpose gym in Diliman, Quezon City.
Davao, seeded 15 here, however, bowed to sixth-seed Marikina in the second round, 1.5-2.5, which negated somewhat its big opening-day performance.
Still, Davao got a full point in this 9-round Swiss System but unique format where a victory is only worth one point no matter what the outcome of each match. A draw is worth half a point.
Davao failed to keep its momentum going after National Master Alexander Lupian drew with International Master (IM) Chito Garma on board 1 after 48 moves of a Queen's Pawn Opening, while NM Sammy Yu bowed to Marikina's J. Gomez in their board 2 match.
Davao's lone win was registered by Jimmy Dano, Mindanao Friendship Games 2001 silver medal winner, who outwitted R. Manabilang in board 3.
Marikina's deaf-mute L. Tobianosa beat Reynaldo Qui¤onez in their board 4 encouunter.
The Davao woodpushers earlier whitewashed Cavite composed of Rolando Reantaso, Rey Tumlus, Ronlito Salonbet and Marion de Jua to earn a match point in the opener Tuesday of the annual tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Davao is still playing No. 25 Balanga City in round as of press time.
Chito Dimakiling, Metro Davao Chess Association (MDCA) president and Davao team coach, said his boys stand a good chance against Balanga.
"There's a great chance for the team to win this round," Dimakiling told Sun.Star Davao in a phone interview Wednesday.
Defending champion Quezon City, led by Grandmaster Eugene Torre, scored two quick points to lead the field after two rounds.
Team Airforce of IM Bong Villamayor and former Davao City standout Oliver Dimakiling is in second with 1.5 points, along with IM Mark Paragua-led Pandayan Bulacan and GM Joey Antonio-led Mandaluyong.
The other teams seeing action in the tournament are Quezon City Team B, and provincial teams from Palo, Leyte, M'lang and North Cotabato.
At stake is the top purse of P200, 000 to the champion team; P100, 000 for the runner-up; P75, 000 for the third placer; and P50, 000 for the fourth placer.
The fifth to 10 placers and individual performers will also receive cash prizes.
