Vendors bear brunt of bomb scare: Teo By Christie Enriquez-Uayan
PUBLIC market vendors are among those that initially felt the aftermath of the bombing at the Sasa wharf in Davao City last April 2.
Vendors themselves have agreed that with the recent blast, consumers prefer shopping inside the wet markets of the major department stores that provide better security.
But, Economic Enterprise Department Chief Roberto Teo said the difficulty is only temporary since food is a basic commodity.
"It is the effect of the bombing. 'Yung sinasabi nila na ang public markets nalulugi it is only temporary because the public has to eat, you have to got to the market to buy food (What others say about the public markets suffering from losses, is just temporary)," Teo explained in Sunday's Tabak forum at the Madayaw Ihaw-Ihaw.
Teo hinted that the government is looking into the possibility of the privatization of the public markets. An investor, is however, yet to express interest in taking over the management and operation of the stores, Teo added.
"We are looking into that (privatization) but as of now, I have not received any concrete proposals submitted by interested individuals or groups," he said.
On the other hand, the vendors in the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (Dcott), after reporting losses due to tightened security, are suffering eviction even before April 19, the deadline previously set by the city.
Celso Gempesaw, City Hall's Action Officer said they held a dialogue last week with the Dcott vendors and the latter have agreed to voluntarily vacate the area.
"I talked to the organization, kinausap ko sila na kung pwede hindi na natin paratingin sa 19 (April), therefore, at anytime, they will remove their structure. Wala nang demolition na mangyayari because sila na mismo ang nagsignify na gigabain nila ang kanilang stalls (I have requested the to vacate the area even before the deadline set by the governent and they have agreed. A demolition will not happen becasue they themselves will dismantle their stalls)," Gempesaw related.
