Crackdown on overpass, sidewalk vendors soon
By Christie Enriquez-Uayan

WITHIN the next few days, Davao City will be harsher in implementing the ordinance preventing sidewalk vendors from occupying more than a third portion of the sidewalk. Overpass vendors, on the other hand, will just have to leave.

Celso Gempesaw, City Hall's Action Officer announced in Sunday's Tabak forum that they have beefed up their staff to solely address the problem on overpass and sidewalk vending.

"Siguro after Holy Week darating na ang aming sasakyan and we will also have additional 20 personnel to solve the problem (Our vehicle will arrive maybe after the Holy Week aside from that, we also have 20 additional personnel to beef up our operations)," he noted.

Most of the time, the apprehension of the vendors has been comparative to that of a cat and mouse act, Gempesaw related.

"Diyan sa overpass dapat wala talagang vendors diyan, yun nga ang isang problema, pag pinupuntahan namin sila tumatakbo, umaalis, pero pag alis namin, bumabalik na naman (Selling in the overpass area is prohibited. When we go to the structures to apprehend the vendors, they run away and hide. They only resume selling after we leave the area)," the city's "action man" revealed.

He called on all the vendors to abide by the law and use only the prescribed portion of the sidewalk areas.

"I am calling the attention of all vendors ug mamahimo sa one-third na lang jud ta sa atong mga sidewalks magbenta (I am appealing to the sidewalk vendors to use only portion allowed by the law)," he appealed.

Gempesaw meanwhile encouraged the vendors to instead apply for stalls in the city's public markets. He said there are 149 vacant stalls that the vendors can choose from.

Roberto Teo, economic enterprise department chief said the displaced vendors would be prioritized over other stall applicants.
