BIR posts P942M collection in city By Christie Enriquez- Uayan
THE Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) District 113, to which Davao City belongs, raked in a total of P 942 million in tax revenues for the first four months of this year.
According to revenue district officer Evelyn Sardido, this is 10 percent higher than their collection of the same period last year.
Records from the BIR 11 showed that in April alone, the tax revenue collection of the district reached P306 million, about P50 million higher than its previous haul.
"This is five percent higher than the amount we collected in April 2002," Sardido said.
Cumulatively, the amount collected during the first four months of this year is P91 million higher than what had been collected during the same period last year.
Because the district has consecutively surpassed its target for four months, Sardido said the BIR 11 has awarded the tax collection performer for the first quarter.
She said she was happy to have reached the target despite the P6 million decrease in taxes paid by the national government agencies.
"For the first quarter nag decrease among tax collectibles from the national government agencies ug P6 million because there were no infrastructure projects here in the city," she explained.
Sardido said Dabawenyos have been so cooperative and have shown desirable tax payment compliance.
"I use the persuasuive approach in convincing people to pay their taxes on time and correctly. Kahit na yung mga delinquent tax payers, we give them time and tax remedies to make the penalty not so hard. Pero kung ayaw talagang magbayad, I use the punitive approach. Naa gyud legal action sa ilaha. (Even the delinquent taxpayers are only given lighter penalties. But if they don't pay despite repeated demands, a legal action will be filed against them)," she said.
This year's annual goal for the BIR in the region is pegged at P3.8 billion, and more than half of it, about P2.8 billion is expected to come from Davao City.
The region, on the other hand, is tasked to collect more than P200 million every month.
