Davraa eyes Palaro title
THE absence of last year's top three placers may give Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) the over-all championship in the 2003 Palarong Pambansa in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.
This was the prediction made by Department of Education (DepEd 11) Pess Chief Melanio Castillo, in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
Castillo said Davraa stands a very good chance in bagging the over-all plum should the National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog and Western Visayas finally decide to waive their participation in the meet.
"Without these regions, we will emerge champion because Region 11 was fourth in the Palaro last year. Their absence in this year's Palaro will make us No. 1," Castillo said.
He said Davraa would then have the edge in all events since NCR used to dominate swimming and gymnastics, while Western Visayas and Southern Tagalog shared the limelight in athletics, taekwondo and most ball games.
"We never lagged behind in previous Palaro. We nearly bagged the elementary championship last year but our second place finishes in football and baseball relegated us to third over-all in that particular category," Castillo said. MLS
