Abellera explains asylum imbroglio
By Aurea A. Gerundio

THE idea of utilizing the closed down Samal Casino Hotel owned by Ekran Berhad as Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) asylum was a mere suggestion, according to Davao City Councilor Nilo Abellera.

Abellera said he understood the negative reaction of Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) Mayor Rogelio Antalan to the suggestion.

Abellera added, however, that there was nothing final about the suggestion.

"It was not final yet. Also, I did not make the proposal. I was asked by a reporter if it is possible to convert the Samal Casino Hotel into an asylum," he said.

Abellera said his answer was to negotiate with the government of Igacos first if the proposal could be pushed through considering the place is part of Davao del Norte.

Abellera said he was misquoted on the issue, the idea of converting the hotel building into an asylum having been fed to him by the reporter.
