No need to postpone school opening: Mabel
By Aurea A. Gerundio

DAVAO City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta sees no grounds to postpone the start of classes to a later date because of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) problem, although President Arroyo leans towards postponement is because of the onset of the rainy season in June.

However, Acosta said the Department of Education (DepEd) division superintendent met with officials of different schools Friday at the Davao City National High School to orient them and outline the things to be done with the growing panic over Sars.

Acosta is neither inclined to the plan to require students to fill up a health checklist during enrollment to ensure that the spread of Sars will be prevented.

"That is an ideal setup. However, it will just cause delay during the enrollment. Kahit nga wala pa yan medyo magulo na kapag enrollment time kasi marami ang enrollees," she said. (Even without such checklist, there's disorder during enrollment simply because there are just too many enrollees.)

Acosta said the parents should also not allow the child to go to school if he or she is suffering from some illness.

"The important thing to check also is the child's background, whether he or she has history of travel to countries affected with Sars or has relatives coming from the identified areas," Acosta said.

Acosta reiterated the entire Davao City has remained Sars-free.
