Remolar leads Philcom vs Lucky Mkt. in Bonguyan Cup By Jet Encila
TEAM Philcom's renewed vigor and improved game plan wore down neophyte Lucky Mkt., 73-70 in the resumption of the 4th Vice Mayor's Cup cagefest Friday at the Smad Gym in Davao City.
With Jojo Remolar, Ruben Guerra and Tata Oliver spearheading the attack, the telecom-masters took the lead at halftime, 33-22 and maintained it until Lucky threatened with a brief rally late in the final quarter. The trio combined with 35 points.
Philcom's lightning-quick plays and rugged offense disabled Lucky's defenses that kept their shooters out of range. Shooting 10 of 12 attempts in the perimeter, Philcom erected a comfortable 69-60 lead late in the fourth period before youthful Lucky squad could bounce back.
Power forward William "The Tank" Cabugwas had a double-double performance with 10 points and 12 rebounds while streak-shooter Peter Isla drilled in 11 points plus eight crucial assists.
Jojo "El Toro' Remolar who was silent in their previous games, spelled disaster for Lucky Mkt with four back-to-back undergoal baskets, eluding the pesky defense of the much taller opponents that was highlighted by a steal and a quick faraway pass to seal the win for Philcom.
Philcom now has a 1-4 win-loss record while Lucky, led by Omar Co and Velazquez with 22 and 14 points each, is saddled with five straight losses.
Earlier, CarTech beat Shell Diesoline Ultra, 78-69 in an emotion-packed encounter that was marred by trash talking and a near brawl between the two squads' power rebounders.
The 4th Vice Mayor Bonguyan cagefest is sanctioned by the Basketball Association of the Philippines under regional director Regino Cua with Aye Capili as secretary and Eugene Chiong as commissioner.
Action resumes Sunday, 3 p.m. at the Gaisano South Citimall SkyGym.
